2007_Q4: Tax Tips Planning Now Could Pay Off In AprilTaxes never really go away. There is a sense of relief on April 15 for those who meet the individual income tax filing deadline. But that sense of accomplishment is temporary. April 16 is not too early to begin planning your tax strategy for the next year.

"Tax planning is a year-round occupation," according to Jamey Rappis, Senior Tax Manager, Clifton Gunderson's Milwaukee, WI office. "Whatever borrowing, lending, spending and investment decisions you make from January to December shape the tax return that you will file in April of the next year."

Rappis goes on to say that the most important time of the year is in the last two months, when taxpayers are given multiple opportunities to lower their overall tax bill. He offers the following tax tips for 2007 – some large and some small – that can add up to savings in April.

Telephone Excise Tax Refund
The IRS estimates that as many as 10 million taxpayers missed this refund in 2006. At $30 to $60 per household, depending on the number of exemptions claimed, that's $300 million to $600 million still left on the table. If you forgot about the deduction on last year's return, you can still claim . . . .
